Basic Flamingo Info

These large pink birds live in large flocks in wetlands. When a flamingo flies, its neck and long legs make a straight line and these flamingoes can live up to be 50 years old.
Flamingoes get their bright pink color from the food it east, or its diet that consists of shrimp. The carotene is the shrimp turn the feathers pink. If a flamingo doesn't each enough shrimp, than its feathers turn white.
Flamingoes have very long necks, long pink legs, and big pink webbed feet. Their eyes are orange. The adults can grow up to be 4 feet and their long bills turn downwards in the middle and it is used for filter feeding.
The flamingoes diet besides shrimp consists of insects, crustaceans, and tiny plants like diatoms and algae.
Flamingoes prefer alkaline waters as their habitat. The American flamingo is native is Central and South America. The birds live in coastal area and on cold mountain lakes in the Andes Mountains.
